I can’t stand being Gluten Free

Being Gluten free is probably one of the most complicated things I have ever encountered in my life. Everything is made out of Gluten! I can’t believe I have to give up my favorite foods. I don’t think I can do this. I would just rather eat gluten and not feel very good.

Does that sound like you? Do you hate the fact that you have to give up all the wonderful tasting food God has placed on this earth? Well, that is exactly how I feel. I do not want to eat gluten-free, its way to hard, way to expensive, and the food doesn’t even taste as good. If you feel the same way then we will get along very well.

Yesterday and Today was a very hard day for me. I am pretty sure that I ate gluten in both Lunch and Dinner. I told myself that I would be fine, but I haven’t been I have been so sick that I can hardly move. I have a bad habit of telling myself that eating gluten in one or two meals will be okay, but really it is not. Number One rule for the day is Do Not Lie to Yourself! Gluten will hurt you even if you can’t feel it. People who have an allergy to Gluten but still eat it are letting the food they eat put holes into their intestines. So, please take the challenge of not lying to yourself with me.

I feel your pain. Honestly, I went into massive denial when I was diagnosed a few months ago. I still ate “gluteny” foods even though I was getting worse…how could I really be expected to give up pastas and schnitzels? Or pizzas and fried chicken? It was just very hard for me to accept…until a few weeks ago when I got so ill I was almost hospitalized from gluten poisoning!

But now that I’ve been super gluten-free, I feel a lot better. It sucks…but you’re very right. It’s not good to lie to yourself: you’ll hurt yourself or worse! Great post.

  2. Hi There – sorry to hear you are suffering so much and finding it hard to adapt. I am featuring gluten free recipes this week on cooking with one hand and you will see I have options that dont require you to buy anything fancy or feel like you are missing out. I’d love to know what you think x

This makes me sad to read – hopefully I can help with some recipes that are easy and quick and dont need any ‘special’ ingredients. x

I am gathering that you are newly diagnosed and your life has been turned upside down. My teenager who has coeliac disease just wanted to be normal and have his life go back to normal. We are 15 months down the track and things are getting back into a routine, he is much more accepting of his condition and over the last 2 months he has become much more comfortable with eating out with friends.
Depending upon how sick you are, for the first couple of weeks, you might find it better to change two meals a day to gluten free and keep one meal gluten. Dieticians and doctors would not agree but this is better than cheating with all meals and generally not coping at all. Work on a gluten free breakfast and a gluten free dinner and maybe keep that normal sandwich for lunch for a couple of weeks. Dinner is easier than lunch… okay no pasta, but you will eventualy find a pasta that is okay: ours is San Remo. The rice pastas can go very gluggy so we stay away from those pastas. Corn torillas and tacos, Asian stir fries and rice, are some ideas which works for us. Breakfasts…. gluten free bread is okay if toasted and a good gluten free cereal… toasted granola is good too.
After 15 months we have found a bread…. not sure what part of the world you are in but in Australia, a new bread is now available : Burgen Gluten Free White. My son is finally able to have sandwiches again for lunch. Mind you he loves sushi so this has always been a good lunch for him (make sure the soy sauce is gluten free).

  5. try and reapproach your situation. Gluten filled foods are not your favourite foods…..what non gluten foods do you just love? Mine are roast lamb and veggies and for sweets nothing beats apple and rhubarb nut crumble! I know I sometimes miss a good old cream bun, but I do love other food and even more I love myself enough to look after my body! I know it is challenging but I believe you can do it! good luck
